About Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies are an American professional baseball team based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Founded in 1914 as the Knoxville Smokies, the franchise experienced many changes throughout its long history. From 1940 to 1997, the team was known as the Knoxville Smokies and enjoyed success with several championship titles during that period. The Smokies play their home games at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee, which opened in 2000 and is the newest stadium in Minor League Baseball. The team is currently a member of the Southern League and is affiliated with the Chicago Cubs since 2007. Famous rivalries include those against fellow Southern League teams such as Birmingham Barons and Chattanooga Lookouts.

Over the years, several achievements have been made: in 1978 Tennessee minor league baseball won their first league title and have had multiple All-Star players like pitcher Doug Drabek who went on to enjoy a successful Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. As of 2021, Tennessee Smokies team head coach is Mike Shildt who has been associated with several Major League Baseball teams including overseeing player development for both Atlanta Braves and St Louis Cardinals before coming to Tennessee Smokies. Notable top players from past years include Don Kessinger who began his career with Smokies before going on to win six Gold Glove Awards playing for Chicago Cubs; Bob Dernier who played for Philadelphia Phillies; and LaTroy Hawkins whose time at Smokies earned him a promotion to Majors where he appeared in more than 1000 games pitching for eight different teams over 18 seasons.

The Tennessee Smokies have unveiled the preliminary roster for the upcoming 2024 season. The team comprises several highly regarded prospects from the Chicago Cubs organization, consisting of 15 pitchers and 15 position players. These talented individuals bring a wealth of skill and potential to the team's roster. The Smokies' outfielders feature Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Chicago Cubs' highly regarded prospect. Crow-Armstrong showcased his skills last year, amassing an impressive 132 hits and 61 RBI in a total of 101 games across Class A Myrtle Beach and Class High A South Bend. Joining them will be Jordan Nwogu, along with Smokies returners Zach Davis and Cole Roederer. Notably, the infield will showcase Chase Strumpf, who is not only the Cubs' No. 25 prospect but also a returning player to Kodak.
