The musical comedy Something Rotten was written by Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell, with Something Rotten music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. The brothers realize (Wayne Kirkpatrick, and Karey Kirkpatrick) to co-produce the piece with Kevin McCollum. The musical is set in the 1590s, in the town of Norwich, England. William Shakespeare is a struggling playwright who is trying to write a hit play. His brother, Nigel, comes up with the idea to write a musical about the Black Plague. The musical was first performed at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington in July 2015. It opened on Something Rotten Broadway at the St. James Theatre on April 22, 2016. Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom had an idea for the musical since the 1990s.
In 2010, they eventually collaborated with John O'Farrell to develop some songs, and they sent the producer Kevin McCollum both the songs and a treatment. The Bottom brothers are desperate to write a Something Totten play but they're stuck in the shadow of the Renaissance rock star William Shakespeare. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world's very first musical!
