About San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are an American professional basketball team based in San Antonio. The Spurs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. The Spurs are one of four former American Basketball Association (ABA) teams to remain intact in the NBA after the 1976 ABA–NBA merger and are the only former ABA team to have won an NBA championship. The franchise won NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. As of May 2016, the Spurs had the highest winning percentage among active NBA franchises during the regular season with 65.2 percent. In their 40 NBA seasons since 1976–77, the Spurs have amassed a .610 winning percentage (second only to the Los Angeles Lakers), and have posted 19 seasons of 50 or more wins (third most in NBA history). As of the 2017–18 season, the Spurs have won 23 division titles. For years, the San Antonio Spurs have dominated the Western Conference and proven themselves as a top-tier NBA franchise; boasting five titles to their name. Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili & Tony Parker are just some of the illustrious names that have made this possible.

With their 50th win in the 2016–17 season, the Spurs extended their record for most consecutive 50-win seasons to 18 (15 of which were 60-win seasons, an NBA record). They have made the playoffs in 34 of those seasons (80%), and have only missed the playoffs four times since 1990–91 when a season was lost due to a lockout. They also set a franchise record for 16 consecutive playoff appearances from 1998–99 to 2013–14. In their 34 NBA playoff appearances, the Spurs have won five NBA championships, four conference titles, and 14 division titles. The team has qualified for the playoffs in 20 of the last 21 seasons since 1997–98, including each of the last 16 seasons (since 2002–03). The Spurs started out as one of the ABA's eight original teams in 1967. The team played in the ABA from 1967 to 1976. In their first season, 1967–68, the Spurs went 47–35 (a winning percentage of .573). The Spurs were one of four ABA teams that joined the NBA in the ABA–NBA merger in 1976.

The team played in the Central Division of the Western Conference in the NBA's 1976–77 season. They had a winning percentage of .688 (48–22) that season. In their first year in the NBA, the Spurs won their division championship and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in team history. Since joining the NBA, the Spurs have made the playoffs in 34 of their 41 seasons, including 23 division titles. As of the 2016–17 season, they have won 5 NBA championships (in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014), which is tied for the fourth most in NBA history. The Spurs' five championships are second only to the San Francisco Warriors/Golden State Warriors, who have won six championships. The Spurs have also made the conference Finals 14 times and the NBA Finals 10 times, both of which are second only to the Lakers. In addition to their five championships, the Spurs have qualified for the playoffs as division champions 20 times and as conference runners-up 12 times. They have also had winning seasons in 33 of their 41 seasons, including 23 seasons with 50 or more wins. The Spurs have only missed the playoffs four times since 1990–91, when a season was lost due to a lockout. Gregg Popovich is at the helm of the San Antonio Spurs, steering their success as head coach.

In 2023, the San Antonio Spurs embarked on a transformative journey that showcased their commitment to both tradition and evolution. Under the seasoned leadership of Coach Gregg Popovich, the team navigated a season marked by resilience and strategic prowess. Young talents like Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson emerged as dynamic forces on the court, injecting a fresh energy into the Spurs' playstyle. The seasoned veteran, DeMar DeRozan, continued to be the reliable cornerstone, delivering clutch performances that solidified his status as a leader. The Spurs' commitment to player development paid dividends, as their roster seamlessly blended experience with youthful exuberance. Off the court, the organization continued its community-centric approach, engaging in various philanthropic endeavors that endeared them even more to their loyal fanbase. While the road to success may have had its challenges, the Spurs' 2023 season ultimately symbolized a harmonious blend of past and future, laying the foundation for sustained excellence in the storied franchise's legacy.
