Representing Atlanta proudly, the Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team who strives to bring excellence and entertainment on and off the court. As a part of the Eastern Conference Southeast Division, the Hawks proudly represent their city in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team proudly plays at State Farm Arena for their home games. It all started in 1946, when Ben Kerner and Leo Ferris founded the Buffalo Bisons basketball team in Buffalo, New York. This was part of the National Basketball League (NBL) at that time. After 38 days in Buffalo, the team moved to Moline and was renamed the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Their journey continued when they joined forces with NBA as part of the merger between NBL and Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1949 where their illustrious coach Red Auerbach made a brief appearance. In 1951, Kerner relocated the team to Milwaukee and rebranded them as the Milwaukee Hawks. Four years later in 1955, they moved again to St. Louis - where that same year they won their only NBA Championship ever! Additionally, between 1957-1961 they secured positions in the NBA Finals three more times; a remarkable accomplishment for any basketball squad. On their four trips to the NBA Finals, the St. Louis Hawks battled with Boston Celtics. In 1968, Thomas Cousins and former Georgia Governor Carl Sanders purchased the team from owner Ben Kerner and relocated them to Atlanta. In 1982, the team's All-Star phenomenon, Dominique Wilkins, propelled them to a four game winning streak and made his mark in NBA history as one of its highest scorers. The Hawks have not won an NBA championship in 63 seasons, only second to the Sacramento Kings. The sole time they did so was when they were based in St. Louis and all four of their NBA Finals appearances took place then as well. This 3-decade long drought lasted until 2015, 48 years after not surpassing the semi-finals round regardless of format. In a remarkable display of sportsmanship, the Hawks have become only one of four NBA teams to make it into the playoffs for 10 consecutive years in this century; from 2008-2017 no less. Some of their rivals include Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Memphis Grizzlies. Basketball fans, rejoice!
