Alberta Ballet shows history is both rich and diverse. Alberta Ballet Companies has been around since 1966, making it one of the oldest dance companies in Canada and having an Alberta Ballet School. Throughout its years of operations, the company has become renowned for its unique blend of contemporary and classical ballet. The original cast included more than 20 dancers with names like Alberta Ballet's artistic director and founder, Arnold Spohr, Terri Fitsell, Ross Petty, Thomas Struthers, and Leslie Young. The production crew and creative staff on board have included esteemed names such as choreographer Holly Small, costume designer Joanne Hansen-Keenan, composer David MacIntyre and scenic designer Sean Mulcahy. Alberta Ballet earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination in 1992 for their production of Romeo & Juliet, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tale. Under the direction of John Neumeier who was also responsible for the set designs, Baldwin Guggenheim Award winner Jean Grand-Maître produced the work which went on to earn two Dora Mavor Moore Awards in 2002.
One of Alberta Ballet’s most popular performances includes the word ‘Outcast' which premiered at Canada’s National Arts Centre in 2001 under co-director Neumeier. This particular performance featured favorite songs from bands such as U2, Nirvana, Radiohead, and Coldplay to name a few. Since then it has been performed multiple times around the world including in locations such as France where it was held at Nice’s Opéra de Nice and Monaco’s Raoul Dufy Theater in 2009. Today Alberta Ballet continues to captivate audiences with each new performance they present across North America and beyond – creating timeless memories that will last forever. Along with the performance of 'Outcast', Alberta Ballet continues to create and present captivating new works.
