About Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, more commonly known as Joseph, is a musical journey featuring lyrics from lauded composer Tim Rice and music from masterful musician Andrew Lloyd Webber. This spellbinding performance follows the story of Joseph from The Bible's Book of Genesis. For the first time, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical was performed publicly; although their debut collaboration in 1965 - The Likes of Us – remained unperformed until 2005. In 1968, Joseph was first introduced as an innovative 15-minute "pop cantata" at Colet Court School in London before Novello published it the following year. It was then immediately recorded by Decca Records with multiple expansions. In the wake of the resounding triumph that was Jesus Christ Superstar, Lloyd Webber, and Rice's next piece, amateur stagings of Joseph started in America from 1970 onwards. With its beloved characters, well-known storylines, and timeless music, it's no wonder countless productions of this retelling of Joseph have been so successful. The US release for its accompanying album arrived a year later in 1971. In 1972, these family musicals had their professional debut at the Haymarket ice rink during Edinburgh's International Festival. To everyone's delight, it ran for a full 35 minutes! Part Two of Bible One, a captivating performance by the Young Vic Theatre Company in association with the National Theatre of Great Britain, was an experience that won't soon be forgotten.

Since in the process of being updated and expanded, this musical debuted on the West End stage back in 1973. In 1974, the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester was where a full modern version of this piece first took place and was recorded that same year. In 1982, the musical debuted on Broadway to much acclaim. Glorious revivals, expansive nationwide tours, and a direct-to-video film featuring the renowned Donny Osmond were all part of its success story. Already by 2008, the Useful Group — which holds the copyright to this show — reported that more than 20,000 schools and amateur theatrical companies had presented productions of it. On the 50th anniversary of its premiere, Joseph resurfaced in a special concert production at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall on February 17, 2020. It was an unforgettable night filled with captivating music and performances! Audience members flocked to the sold-out, one-night-only Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat concert produced by Manhattan Concert Productions. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been performed in a whopping 86 countries, showcasing famous talents such as Jason Donovan, Donny Osmond, Phillip Schofield, Alexandra Burke, Sheridan Smith, Darren Day, Stephen Gately Gareth Gates, Ian ‘H' Watkins, and David Cassidy. Joseph's repertoire includes internationally renowned pop and musical theatre standards, such as Any Dream Will Do (with Lee Mead), a UK #1 hit; Close Every Door To Me; and Go Go Go, Joseph.

Directed by Michael Arden with Stephen Oremus on conducting duty, backed up by a 300-strong ensemble accompanied by the magnificent New York City Chamber Orchestra - this show truly did not disappoint! Noah Galvin (who stepped in at the last minute for Ari'el Stachel) played an outstanding performance as Joseph whilst Eden Espinosa, Alex Newell, and Jessica Vosk shone in their roles of 'The Narrator'. Supplementing the cast was Chuck Cooper as Jacob, Andy Karl in the role of Potiphar, Orfeh and Merle Dandridge acting up a storm as Mrs. Potiphar and The Pharaoh respectively. Returning to the London Palladium after a hiatus, the production played an exclusive season in 2021 that ran from July 1st through September 5th. Postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this production was made extraordinary by Alexandra Burke's portrayal of The Narrator and Yarrow and Donovan reprising their roles as Joseph and Pharaoh. Linzi Hateley returned to her role as the Narrator for particular shows. In 2022, the production set off on an exciting UK Tour that began in Manchester and concluded at Edinburgh's celebrated stage on October 29th. In December 2022, Jac Yarrow reprised his role in the opening of this production in Toronto and will continue to perform until February 2024.
