About Calgary Flames

Based in Calgary, the professional ice hockey team known as the Flames compete in the National Hockey League (NHL). They are apart of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference and also happen to be third major professional ice hockey representatives for their city- following closely behind Deerfoot Inn & Casino and McMahon Stadium. The Flames stand out amongst other teams because they are one of two NHL franchises located in Alberta; with their competition being none other than Edmonton Oilers. The proximity between these two cities has led to a stir among fanatics, initiating what is now well known as "The Battle of Alberta". The Hawks played their home games in the Omni Coliseum located in downtown Atlanta. The Flames have a long and rich history, going back to the early 1970's when they were first founded in Atlanta as the Atlanta Flames. In 1972, the team was founded in Atlanta as the Atlanta Flames. Three years later in 1980, they would relocate to Calgary. For their first three seasons playing in Calgary, they called the Stampede Corral home before moving into what we now know as the Scotiabank Saddledome (originally named Olympic Saddledome) in 1983. The following season - 1985/1986 - saw them become the first Calgary team since 1923/1924 Tigers to compete for Lord Stanley's Cup.

In 1988, the Flames won their first Stanley Cup Final title. Then, in 2004, they had an unexpected run to the Finals which gave rise to the Red Mile. In 2011, they hosted and won the second Heritage Classic outdoor game. They remained in that city until 1980, when owner Nelson Skalbania made a deal with Harold Ballard of Toronto Maple Leafs for the team to relocated to Calgary. After moving to Calgary, the Flames took part in a memorable Stanley Cup run in the 1986-1987 season, eventually losing to the Montreal Canadiens. Since then, the Flames have been relatively successful and remain one of Calgary's most beloved teams. They've made some major moves lately, such as hiring Bill Peters as their new head coach during the 2018 off season and signing veteran goaltender David Rittich to a two-year contract extension. The first regular season home game for the Flames in 2019-2020 was on October 5th against their Canadian rivals, the Vancouver Canucks. The Flames have also recently made headlines with their plans to construct Scotia Bank Arena in the city's downtown core. The Calgary Flames have been exciting fans with their ice hockey skills for nearly 40 years. Some of the all-time greats to play for the team include Theoren Fleury, Jerome Iginla, Hakan Loob, Lanny McDonald, Joe Nieuwendyk, Joey Mullen and Doug Gilmour. See you at the Eastern Conference play offs!
