The Sleeping Beauty is a beloved ballet in three acts to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, his Opus 66, completed in 1889. It's one of the most iconic and well-known ballets to date. The original production premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on 15 January 1890, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with additional choreography by Enrico Cecchetti. It's based on Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale La Belle au bois dormant (The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood). The story follows Princess Aurora who is cursed by an evil fairy, but saved by a good one and finally awakens from her sleep after 100 years when she is kissed by a prince. Sleeping Beauty has been performed around the world for over 130 years and has become a timeless classic among audiences of all ages. In addition to its theatrical success, it has also spawned numerous recordings, including those conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham and Leonard Slatkin. Its popularity has also led to many awards, such as the Grammy Award for Best Classical Recording in 1986 and the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros in 1987.
