About Wonderland

Wonderland, formerly called Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure: A New Alice, is a musical with a book by Jack Murphy and Gregory Boyd, lyrics by Murphy, and music by Frank Wildhorn. It is based on the 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Prior to its Broadway debut, the musical had a regional theatre premiered at Theatre Under The Stars in Houston, Texas from March 12 to April 6, 2009. It then played at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington from April 28 to May 31, 2009. After another regional theatre engagement at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey from September 16 to October 11, 2009, the musical then played on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre. The original Broadway production closed on April 3, 2011, after 92 performances and 28 previews. The musical was nominated for three Drama Desk Awards and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. The musical has been praised for its creative use of music, visual effects, and elaborate set designs.

Wonderland won multiple awards including Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score in 2011 and a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2011. A revised production premiered in Tokyo, Japan on April 7, 2012, at the Imperial Theatre. The Japanese production ran until June 24. A Korean language production of Wonderland opened in Seoul on August 9, 2012, at the Charlotte Theatre. The first US national tour of Wonderland began on October 2, 2012, in Philadelphia and ended on August 4, 2013, in Los Angeles. The musical contains several nods to the original book as well as references to other popular cultures. For example, "I'm Late" (a play on the Cheshire Cat's catchphrase "We're all mad here") is a direct reference to the White Rabbit being late throughout Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Additionally, Mad Hatter's tea party is based on the original book's illustration by John Tenniel. Wonderland musical cast includes Paige Davis as Alice, Sasha Allen as the Red Queen, Darren Ritchie as the White Knight, Karen Mason as the Mad Hatter, Janet Dacal as The Queen of Hearts, Teal Wicks as The Caterpillar, Kenita R. Miller as Tweedle Dee and E. Clayton Cornelious as Tweedle Dum. The play is written by Jack Murphy and Frank Wildhorn with music and lyrics by Frank Wildhorn and Jeremy Roberts.
