Fat Ham is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play, Hamlet. Written by James Ijames, Fat Ham is a modern twist on the original tragedy that has captivated audiences around the world. It premiered at the Philadelphia Theater Company in 2021 and was an immediate success. After its debut performance, it was nominated for two Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre and won four awards including Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Production of a Play. The play tells the story of a young man named Laertes who is struggling to come to terms with his father’s death and his mother’s remarriage to his uncle. Set in a vibrant African-American community, Laertes must face difficult decisions as he attempts to find justice for his father’s death while also dealing with his inner turmoil. His journey takes him through many different places and people as he grapples with loyalty, love, revenge, and betrayal. The cast of Fat Ham includes some of the most talented actors from both stage and screen including Tony Award winner André De Shields (Laertes), Obie Award winner Pascale Armand (Gertrude), Emmy Award nominee Brandon J Dirden (Claudius).
The play also includes Grammy Award nominee Adrienne C Moore (Ophelia) and Academy Award nominee Viola Davis (Polonius). The production has been highly praised for its creativity in re-imagining Shakespeare’s classic tale with a contemporary setting. It has received rave reviews from critics who have described it as “a theatrical masterpiece” and “an electrifying experience”.
