About David Gray

David Gray is a singer-songwriter who was born in Manchester, England, on June 4, 1968. His mother worked as a secretary, and his father was a musician who played in a band called the Deltas. When Gray was eight years old, his parents divorced, and he and his sister were raised by their mother. Gray began his music career by playing guitar when he was ten years old and wrote his first song when he was thirteen. He attended the University of Liverpool, where he studied art and design. After graduation, he moved to London and worked as a waiter while performing in clubs and bars. In 1993, Gray self-released his first debut album, A Century Ends. The studio album sold only a few copies, but it caught the attention of Dave Matthews, who invited Gray to open for his band in England. The following year, Gray signed with the label Hut Recordings and released his second album, Flesh. The album was not a commercial success, but it did receive some critical acclaim. In 1996, Gray released his third album, Sell, Sell, Sell. The album's lead single, "Babylon," became a surprise hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number four on the UK Singles Chart. He had the privilege of playing alongside renowned artists like Kirsty MacColl, Dave Matthews Band, and Radiohead. The success of "Babylon" led to increased sales of Sell, Sell, Sell, and the album was eventually certified platinum in the UK. Gray's fourth album, White Ladder, was released in 1998. The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and selling more than seven million copies worldwide. "Babylon" was re-released as a single from the album and became an even bigger hit, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart. "Please Forgive Me" and "This Year's Love" were also released as singles from White Ladder, both of which reached the top ten of the UK chart. In 2000, Gray won two Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and Best British Album for White Ladder. Gray has released seven studio albums since White Ladder, including Life in Slow Motion (2005), Draw the Line (2009), and Mutineers (2014). His most recent album, Gold in a Brass Age, was released in 2018. Gray has also worked as a producer and songwriter for other artists, including Vashti Bunyan, Lisa Hannigan, and Emmy the Great.
