About Die Zauberflote

Die Zauberflöte, or The Magic Flute in English, is an opera composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. This classic opera has become one of the most beloved works in classical music and is a staple of the operatic repertoire. It premiered in Vienna on 30 September 1791 at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden. Die Zauberflöte is set in ancient Egypt and tells the story of Tamino, who embarks on a journey to rescue Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, from captivity under Sarastro. Throughout his quest, he is accompanied by Papageno and three ladies sent by the Queen of the Night. The Magic Flute has been performed numerous times throughout history with different casts and venues. In 1815 it was performed at La Scala in Milan with Gioachino Rossini conducting. In 1844 it was performed at Salzburg’s Theater an der Wien with Franz Schubert conducting. In 1876 it was performed at London’s Royal Opera House with Arthur Sullivan conducting. The first performance in America took place in New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House in 1891 with Anton Seidl conducting. More recently, Die Zauberflöte has been revived for modern audiences all over Europe including performances at Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera & Ballet (2017)

Also in Madrid's Teatro Real (2018), Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden (2019), and Paris' Opéra Bastille (2020).
