About Toronto Maple Leafs

Representing the city of Toronto with fierce loyalty, The Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club - more commonly referred to as "The Leafs" - are a world-renowned professional ice hockey team. Representing the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference, they take part in the fierce competition within the National Hockey League (NHL). Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, a company that owns several of the city's professional sports teams, is the proud owner of this club. BCE Inc. and Rogers Communications have agreed to split the Maple Leafs' broadcasting rights. In 1917, the Toronto Arenas Club was founded and operated merely under the title of 'Toronto. In 1919, the club was rebranded as the Toronto St. Patricks after being acquired by new owners. In 1927, Conn Smythe took ownership of the club and rechristened it as the Maple Leafs. One of the "Original Six" NHL teams, this club miraculously endured through the tumultuous period of League retrenchment during the Great Depression. With their remarkable 13 Stanley Cup titles, the club stands second only to Montreal Canadiens who have won 24 championships. The club began its 14-year tenure at the Mutual Street Arena and then made a move to Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931 for more fanfare. Since then, the team has developed into one of Canada's most prestigious sports organizations. The Toronto Maple Leafs have a rich and storied history that includes two distinct eras of dominance: 1947 to 1951 and 1962 to 1967.

In February 1999, the entire Maple Leafs franchise shifted their home court to Scotiabank Arena (initially named Air Canada Centre). Since then, the team has developed into one of Canada's most prestigious sports organizations. The Toronto Maple Leafs have displayed the utmost respect for their 19 most esteemed athletes by retiring 13 numbers in honor of them, thus becoming the first professional sports team to do so. Moreover, numerous people related to the club have been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Currently, the Maple Leafs are connected to two minor league teams: the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League and the Newfoundland Growlers from ECHL.On October 2nd, 2019, the Toronto Maple Leafs proudly named Tavares their 25th team captain for their upcoming season. As they opened the game that night, there was a sense of pride and excitement as Tavares took to the ice in his new role. Following a lackluster 9–10–4 start to the 2019-20 season, the organization decided to make a change and let go of Babcock as head coach on November 20. Sheldon Keefe was promoted in his stead. On August 9, the Toronto Maple Leafs were knocked out of contention for the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers, after being bested in a five-game series by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In light of the pandemic and Canada-U.S border closures, the Toronto Maple Leafs were temporarily relocated to the North Division for the 2020-21 season along with other Canadian NHL teams. During that season, teams only competed against their new division rivals in a reduced 56-game schedule. On May 8, 2021, the Leafs proudly claimed victory in their division title chase, granting them the home-court advantage for the first two rounds of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs. Matthews accomplished a remarkable feat, becoming the first Maple Leaf to win the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy with an astonishing 41 goals in only 52 games played - leading all other players in the league. Despite the high hopes of Leafs' fans, they were ultimately defeated in the First Round by their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens. After taking a commanding 3–1 lead in the series, they crumbled under pressure and bowed out with a disappointing loss. The Maple Leafs' team plays most home games at Scotiabank Arena and where Mats Sundin and Doug Gilmour lead the team in their playing career.

Despite the heartbreaking conclusion to their last season, the Maple Leafs remain determined and ready to make a comeback. Not only has their main roster remained mostly unchanged, but they have also added some new talent in key positions that will surely bolster their chances at success this time around. The team experienced a smooth regular season with the addition of goaltender Carter Hutton from the Arizona Coyotes on February 21, 2022, and when they acquired defenseman Mark Giordano and center Colin Blackwell from the Seattle Kraken on March 21. On April 17, the Toronto Maple Leafs shattered their records by accumulating 106 points and 50 wins in a single season during an electrifying 4-2 triumph over the New York Islanders. Despite their success, they couldn't keep up with the Florida Panthers who not only won their division but had the highest ranking in the Eastern Conference. Despite the Maple Leafs' valiant effort, they were unable to make it past the First Round of Playoffs and eventually fell in a grueling series against Tampa Bay Lightning.
