In 2007, he was awarded the Mark Twain. He has five Grammy Awards, one Primetime Emmy Award, and an Honorary Academy Award, which he received at the Academy's 5th Annual Governors Awards in 2013. He also created a Netflix comedy show with Martin Short called, Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. 

As a musician, Martin has released several albums including The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo and Rare Bird Alert. He also wrote and performed the theme song for the popular sitcom Cheers. He has also written several books, including comedy memoirs, children's novels, and a novella. He has also won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, as well as several awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California with his wife, actress Anne Stringfield. He also enjoys playing the banjo, guitar, and piano. In 2016, he was honored as the recipient of the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award.
