Manchester City Football Club is an English football club based in Manchester that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), it became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. The club's home games are played at the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, to which it moved in 2003, having played at Maine Road since 1923. City entered the Football League in 1899 and won its first major honor with the FA Cup in 1904. It had its first period of success in the 1920s, winning the League Championship in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1941 before being relegated in 1963. After winning the Second Division title in 1965, City gained promotion to the top flight again; it won the League Cup in 1968 and ended the season as runners-up of the European Cup Winners' Cup, losing to Slavia Prague in the final. The club won the League Championship again in 1972, followed by various cup competitions between 1975 and 1998. In 2001, the club was bought by Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) and became one of the wealthiest in the world. In 2008, they acquired Jô and became the first English side to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup in the same season. They won their second Premier League title in 2012 with a record points total of 89. Following a period of decline, City regained its status as a top-flight club by winning the 2013–14 Premier League. In 2016, they became the first club in English football history to win three successive Premier League titles. Pep Guardiola took charge of City in 2016 and guided them to record-breaking successes in his first two seasons; winning the Premier League and EFL Cup by large margins, becoming the only team ever to retain both domestic cups in England, and amassing 198 points across his two title-winning seasons – the most points any team has accumulated in a single Premier League campaign. The club also holds the joint record for the most consecutive Premier League matches won (18), while they are one of only two clubs to have won all three available domestic trophies in a single season. With an annual revenue of €560.8 million in 2019, City is the fifth-highest earning football club in the world, and with an estimated value of over €2.474 billion, they are the world's sixth-most valuable football club. They are one of only two clubs to be owned by a private equity firm (ADUG), the other being Paris Saint-Germain. The club's official nickname is "The Citizens", although fans have typically referred to the club as "City" or "Sky Blues". In 2019, Forbes estimated the club was the fifth most valuable in Europe and the eleventh most valuable football club in the world. City ranked second in a 2018 report compiled by Brand Finance which evaluated the world's biggest clubs. They are one of only three clubs (the others being Real Madrid and Barcelona) to earn over €1 billion in revenue per year. With stellar offensive performers, including Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and Mahrez at the helm, they are sure to deliver an electrifying performance on the football pitch. Their current manager is Pep Guardiola.
