The Light in the Piazza is an award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, based on the 1960 novella of the same name by Elizabeth Spencer. It tells the story of a young American woman on vacation in Florence, Italy, who falls in love with a handsome Italian man. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2005 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards that year, winning six including Best Score and Best Orchestration. The original cast of The Light in the Piazza included Victoria Clark as Margaret Johnson, Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson, Matthew Morrison as Fabrizio Naccarelli, and Michael Berresse as Signor Naccarelli. The show also featured an ensemble cast of talented performers from around the world. In 2006, a cast recording was released which received two Grammy Award nominations for Best Musical Show Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).
In 2009, The Light in the Piazza had its first international production at London's Royal National Theatre. This production starred Laura Michelle Kelly as Margaret Johnson and Alex Jennings as Signor Naccarelli. In 2012 it was adapted into a feature film starring Christine Baranski and Matthew Goode. The Light in the Piazza will be returning to Broadway for its 2024 theatre season! This revival will feature a new cast of performers but will remain true to its original storyline.
