    About Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team residing in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Founded in 1946 as one of the league's eight original teams, the team plays its home games at TD Garden, which they share with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Celtics are one of only two NBA teams with an active dynasty, having won thirteen league championships, which is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers. Eight of these championships have been achieved since the appointment of Hall of Fame head coach Red Auerbach in 1950. The Celtics have had a long-standing rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers, most notably in the 1960s and 1980s. The two teams' players - Larry Bird for the Celtics and Magic Johnson for the Lakers - were involved in an ongoing feud during that time. They've played each other in the NBA Finals 12 times (including recent appearances in 2008 and 2010), more than any other two teams, of which the Celtics have won nine. The Celtics have had four players (Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Dave Cowens, and Larry Bird) win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award--an NBA record.

The nickname "Celtics" and their mascot "Lucky the Leprechaun" are both references to Boston's large Irish population and the Original Celtics team. Coach Red Auerbach's Celtics draft-day trade in 1956, which led to the acquisition of center Bill Russell, marked the beginning of the team's journey to NBA domination. With Russell and point guard Bob Cousy at the helm, they won their first championship title in 1957. The Celtics have a widespread fan base throughout the United States and Canada. As of 2015, the Celtics have the second most wins in NBA history, with 3,270, and a winning percentage of .577. Boston has been a haven for several of the NBA's most celebrated players and coaches, such as Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, K.C. Jones, JoJo White, and Dave Cowens to name but a few; along with Larry Bird , Kevin McHale , Robert Parish , Paul Pierce, Brad Stevens, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen - all authoritative figures in their own right- not forgetting Red Auerbach, the legendary coach who steered them to success.
