Sleeping Beauty is a ballet with a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. The music was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (his opus 66). The score with sensory-adapted performance was completed in 1889 and is the second of his three ballets. The libretto was based on Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood", which was adapted into a ballet by Carlo Gozzi. The plot follows the good Fairy Lurline, who places a curse on Princess Aurora that can only be broken by true love's kiss. When Aurora pricks her finger with a spinning wheel's spindle, she falls into a deep sleep. A hundred years later, Prince Désiré awakens her with a kiss. The ballet was first presented at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on December 6, 1890, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The premiere was conducted by Eduard Nápravník.
