The Mars Volta is an American progressive rock band from El Paso, Texas, formed in 2001. The band was founded by guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and has released six studio albums since its inception. The Mars Volta's music is characterized by complex song structures, experimental instrumentation, and intricate lyrical themes that draw on a variety of influences including Latin music, punk rock, jazz fusion, electronic music, and psychedelic rock. The Mars Volta have been critically acclaimed for their ambitious compositions and attention to detail throughout their career. Their debut album De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) earned them a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2004 ceremony. They followed it up with Frances the Mute (2005) which received even greater critical acclaim and spawned several singles such as "The Widow" and "L'Via L'Viaquez". Following this success, The Mars Volta released Amputechture (2006), which featured the hit single "Viscera Eyes". This album was also well-received by critics but failed to match the commercial success of their previous two efforts.
In 2009, The Mars Volta released Octahedron which contained some of their most accessible material yet; however, it still maintained the complexity of their sound. Following this album they went on hiatus until 2012 when they released Noctourniquet which featured a more melodic approach to their sound while still maintaining its progressive elements. In 2013 they released their sixth studio album Bedlam in Goliath which showcased some of their most experimental work yet; however, it was not as well received as some of their earlier efforts. The Mars Volta are set to embark on a 2023 world tour in support of their upcoming seventh studio album. Fans can expect to hear classic hits such as “The Widow” and “L’Via L’Viaquez” as well as new material from the upcoming record during these live shows. Additionally, fans will be able to experience an immersive multimedia experience featuring visuals created by renowned artist Paul Pope that will accompany each song performed during the tour.
