About San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres are an American professional baseball team based in San Diego. The Padres compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. They play their home games at Petco Park. The Padres were founded in 1969 as part of the MLB expansion. The team's primary colors are white, black, and sandstone. They share a uniform pattern somewhat similar to the Oakland Athletics, yet they are unrelated to that franchise. The San Diego Padres Dodgers adopted their name from the Pacific Coast League team that arrived in San Diego in 1936. That minor league franchise won the PCL title in 1937, and then again in 1940 and 1955. The team's first owner was C. Arnholt Smith, a prominent San Diego businessman and former owner of the PCL Padres whose interests also included banking, shipbuilding, and real estate. Controversy arose in 1971 when Smith was accused of selling shares in the team to members of organized crime. The group included known gambler Michael Milken, who would later be sentenced to prison for securities fraud. The charges were never proven, but Smith out of caution divested himself of the team. A local ownership group led by psychiatrist and real estate investor Robert O. Peterson acquired the team. Peterson worked as the team's president and general manager until 1974 when he was forced to resign by Major League Baseball after it was revealed that he had made an illegal campaign contribution to then-President Richard Nixon.

San Diego businessman Ray Kroc, owner of the McDonald's fast food chain, acquired a controlling interest in the team in 1974. Under Kroc's ownership, the Padres won their first National League pennant in 1984. Tony Gwynn, who won eight league batting titles during his time with the Padres, was the main draw for fans in the 1980s and 1990s. They reached the World Series for the first time that same year, but lost to the Detroit Tigers in five games. The Padres suffered a then-record loss of 108 games in 1993 but rebounded to win their second National League pennant in 1998 behind the play of National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Ken Caminiti and American League Cy Young Award winner Kevin Brown. The Padres are now the sole team from any of the four major American professional sports leagues in the San Diego sports market as a result of the Chargers' relocation to Los Angeles in 2017. With the addition of superstar third baseman Manny Machado who has signed a long-term contract with the Padres, San Diego is sure to be a serious contender in the National League West for many years together with Outfielder Dave Winfield, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

"We've heard that statement repeatedly over the past four or five years," commented Preller, the General Manager of the San Diego Padres. "Last year, in particular, there was extensive discussion regarding the state of our system." At Trade Deadline, our possibilities were endless. We had the opportunity to acquire any baseball player, even someone as remarkable as Juan Soto. Now, our farm system is on the brink of receiving a new wave of talent. The San Diego Padres concluded the three-day MLB Draft on Tuesday, making a total of 18 selections. The upcoming class holds great importance for the team as it aims to revitalize its system following the trade frenzy that took place last summer.
