Canadian scratch DJ Eric San, also known by his stage as Kid Koala, is also a music producer, theatrical producer, film composer, multimedia performer, and visual artist. Kid Koala has released five solo albums, three with his band Deltron 3030, and one with The Slew. He has also collaborated with many other musicians, including Gorillaz, Radiohead, Mos Def, and Mike Patton. Eric San's latest project is a collaboration with Danish band WhoMadeWho called Koolaid. Eric San was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He began scratch DJing while attending Simon Fraser University in the early 1990s. After winning several local and national competitions, he toured with DJ Qbert's Invisibl Skratch Piklz crew. Eric San has also worked as a turntablist for various artists including DJ Shadow, Money Mark, and Dan the Automator. San started by giving out copies of his demo tape Scratchcratchratchatch to McGill students who were living in residence. The McGill music scene in the early 1990s was highly competitive, but San's mixtape helped him get gigs at local clubs. He soon began touring Canada and the United States with his own solo show. In 2000, San released his album, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The album's concept is based on a repetitive strain injury that San developed from years of scratching. The album features guest appearances by DJ Qbert, Dan the Automator, and Money Mark. In 2001, San released his second album, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs. The album is a mix of original material and remixes of tracks by other artists. Some of the album's highlights include a remix of Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" and a collaboration with Radiohead on the track "Skullcrusher Mountain". In June 2014, the Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall Live made its world premiere at Toronto's Luminato Festival. The live show is a multi-disciplinary adaptation of San's 2003 graphic novel, Nufonia Must Fall. The story follows a headphones-sporting robot named Tono who falls in love with a human woman. The live show features an all-star cast of musicians and puppeteers, including members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and is accompanied by a live score composed and performed by Kid Koala. In October 2015, San released his fifth solo album, Music to Draw To: Satellite. The album is a collaboration with Icelandic singer-songwriter Emiliana Torrini. It is a departure from San's previous work, exploring more ambient and downtempo sounds. In May 2017, San released his sixth solo album, Music to Draw To: Solitude. The album is a sequel to Satellite, and features guest appearances by Avey Tare of Animal Collective and Trixie Whitley. In February 2018, San released a remix album of Satellite, titled Music to Draw To: Satellite Remixed. The album features remixes of tracks by various artists, including Four Tet, Caribou, and Tycho. In May 2019, San released his seventh solo album, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs 2. The album is a mix of original material and remixes of tracks by other artists. Some of the album's highlights include a remix of Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" and a collaboration with Radiohead on the track "Skullcrusher Mountain". In June 2020, San released his eighth solo album, Music to Draw To: Satellite 2. The album is a sequel to Satellite, and features guest appearances by Avey Tare of Animal Collective and Trixie Whitley. Buy Kid Koala tickets.
