Nestled in the picturesque town of Foxborough, 22 miles from bustling Boston, lies Gillette Stadium - a multi-purpose arena for all kinds of sports and entertainment. As the exclusive stadium and headquarters to both the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL) as well as the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS), this iconic venue is a symbol of excellence. In 2002, Gillette Stadium became the new home of the Patriots after Foxboro Stadium was retired. The venue also served as the home ground for the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Minutemen football team from 2012-2018, when Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium was being renovated; and it provided part-time use during high-attendance UMass games in that period. Gillette Stadium can host more than 65,000 guests at a time, with 5,876 club seats and 89 VIP suites available for spectators.
On December 6, 1999, the town of Foxborough gave its stamp of approval to commence building a stadium. Construction on this exciting project began three months later on March 24th. On May 11th, 2002 the New England Revolution marked a momentous occasion by hosting the inaugural event at their new stadium. On the 9th of June, Jeremiah Freed was bestowed with the incredible privilege to be the inaugural musical performance on WBCN's River Rave stage. Marking the grand opening of their season, on September 9th, the Patriots unveiled a commemorative banner to celebrate their Super Bowl XXXVI win before an enthusiastic crowd at Monday Night Football's matchup against Pittsburgh Steelers. The stadium initially carried the name of CMGI Field, until somebody snatched up the naming rights post dot-com bubble burst and renamed it Gillette Stadium.
Despite being bought out by Procter & Gamble in 2005, the stadium still prides itself on its original name Gillette. In 2010, Gillette and the Patriots greeted fans with an exciting announcement: their partnership - which involves naming rights for the stadium - will be in effect until 2031! To make your game day experience more convenient, Gillette Stadium is served by the Providence/Stoughton and Franklin lines at Foxboro MBTA station. However, this service is only available during select Patriots games and concerts. Kraft Sports Group, a subordinate of the Kraft Group led by Robert Kraft who holds ownership of both the New England Patriots and Revolution football teams, stands as proprietor and administrator of the stadium. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup quickly approaching, this stadium is ready to serve as a host venue for several matches.
For three decades, the Patriots were proud to call Foxboro Stadium their home from 1971-2001. On December 10, 2021, it was announced that a remarkable $225 million renovation project would be underway. Construction on the project has already started in January of 2022 and is estimated to be completed before the start of the 2023 NFL season. Sporting the largest outdoor video board of its kind in all of the US, renovations to this location include a brand new 22,000-square-foot display at the north end. Boasting a height of 218 feet, the new lighthouse will offer breathtaking 360-degree views that encompass not only the stadium but also Patriot Place and surrounding areas in Foxborough. The construction of these new structures will provide 360-degree connectivity between all levels. On the north end, a grand plaza and fan entrance will be constructed to add even more excitement!
The venue is known for hosting a wide array of exciting events, including NFL and college football games, ice hockey matches, international soccer tournaments such as the MLS Cup, and other notable competitions like Major League Lacrosse. Gillette Stadium will be the proud host of several matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further solidifying its place as a premier sporting venue. This stadium has been chosen as one of the eleven sites across America to host matches for this premier tournament. Concerts of famous artists and performers are also held at the venue like The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffett, AC/DC, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Eagles, Coldplay, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, One Direction and more.
