  • David Sedaris is an American humorist, author, and radio contributor whose signature brand of wit and satire has earned him millions of fans worldwide. He gained prominence with his satirical personal essays which first appeared in the satirical magazine The National Lampoon, then later featured on National Public Radio’s ‘This American Life.’ His writing style is characterized by its dark humor, witty observations, and sardonic view of the world around him. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Sedaris moved to Chicago after graduating college to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. It wasn’t until he performed a comedic monologue at an open mic night that his writing was noticed by the public at large – eventually leading him to write for The New Yorker. Books by David Sedaris include classics such as Naked (1997), I Talk Pretty One Day (2000), Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim (2004), and When You Are Engulfed In Flames (2008). His books have since been met with critical acclaim - winning multiple awards including Time Magazine’s “Humorist of the Year” and two Grammy nominations for Best Spoken Word Album. His works have also been adapted into plays and stage performances. These are The Santaland Diaries as well as adaptations of short stories like Laugh Kookaburra for film and television. Throughout the years, Sedaris has become one of the most recognizable voices on radio through his regular appearances on programs such as This American Life as well as his upcoming David Sedaris Tour Dates which begin this summer across several states in the US and Canada! Sedaris continues to amaze audiences with his hilarious take on life – proving that laughter truly is the best medicine! By speaking candidly about his own experiences as well as those of people around him, he brings an authenticity to his work that resonates deeply with readers everywhere – all demonstrated through some of his widely recognized David Sedaris Quotes such as “Admitting you're wrong can be so satisfying". According to the renowned author David Sedaris, artists possess a unique privilege. While ordinary people may be limited to feeling bad, complaining, or seeking legal recourse when confronted with adversity, artists can transform their experiences into something more. In the meantime, artists are hard at work. Sedaris has been chosen as the commencement speaker for this year's School of the Arts convocation ceremony on May 2023. Ahead of the upcoming celebration, we had the privilege of seeking Sedaris' wisdom for the graduating class. His resolute belief in discovering art within the realms of both anguish and the ordinary resonated profoundly. "I have never experienced war, nor have I suffered physical injury or torture," he expressed during a recent interview with the School of the Arts. "Given enough time, even the slightest misfortune can take on a humorous aspect, so I simply exercise patience until I can perceive negativity in a fresh perspective."
