Virginia Tech Hokies Basketball has a long and proud history in the sport of basketball. The team is based out of Blacksburg, Virginia, located on the grounds of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (also known as Virginia Tech). As members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Hokies have been highly competitive since joining in 2004. The Hokies’ first official season was 1897-98 when they became members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). Over the years, Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball program has enjoyed success with six conference titles including three ACC Championships (1955-56, 1956-57, 2018-19) and one NIT title (1995). The Hokies have also made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, the most recent being in 2019. Virginia Tech plays its home games at Cassell Coliseum which has been around since 1962 when it opened as a replacement for War Memorial Gymnasium. The arena boasts seating of up to 10,052 fans, making it one of the largest basketball facilities in the ACC.
The Hokies have had numerous top players come through their program throughout its history. Among them are Dell Curry (1984-86), Bimbo Coles (1986-90), Eddie Lucas (1990-93), and Zabian Dowdell (2004-08). All four were named first-team All-Conference and each went on to play in the NBA. Another player of note is Malcolm Delaney (2007-11) who was an All-ACC first-team selection twice and earned ACC Player of the Year honors in 2011. He currently plays for BC Akhmat Grozny in the VTB United League. In addition to its team accomplishments, Virginia Tech has also seen a number of individual awards and achievements from players over the course of its history. Bimbo Coles was named ACC Player of the Year in 1990 while Dell Curry won the same honor in 1986 and Zabian Dowdell was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. The Hokies have also had three members inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (Curry, Coles, Lucas).
