About Virginia Cavaliers Basketball

The Virginia Cavaliers basketball team is a storied program with a long and proud history. Founded in 1905, the Cavaliers have built an impressive resume of past successes and future aspirations over the years. The Cavaliers play home games at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, a facility that has held capacity crowds for all home games since its opening in 2006. Here, the Cavaliers have established rivalries with several ACC opponents, including Duke University and the University of North Carolina. With these teams, Virginia has enjoyed some intense battles that have helped shape college basketball rivalry history. In recent years, Virginia has become one of the most successful programs in the nation.

The accolades achieved by this program include three NCAA tournament championships, an NIT championship (in 1980), seventeen total tournament appearances, nine regular-season conference titles, eleven tournament championships, and four Final Fours. During their time as an ACC powerhouse throughout the 1980s and 1990s under legendary coach Terry Holland, Virginia produced many All-Americans such as Curtis Staples (1993), Ralph Sampson (1983), and Bryant Stith (1992). Most recently, the Cavaliers have had great success under Head Coach Tony Bennett. In 2018-19, they won their first NCAA championship after defeating Texas Tech in overtime in the title game. That same year saw Justin Anderson win ACC Player of the Year honors while Malcolm Brogdon was named National Player of the Year.

In 2019-20 they advanced to their second Final Four before falling to eventual champions Auburn University Tigers in overtime due to their heroics on both ends of the floor from their star guards Kihei Clark and Ty Jerome who was later drafted into the NBA along with De’Andre Hunter being drafted 4th overall pick by Los Angeles Lakers during 2019 draft night. These accomplishments speak volumes to what this program is capable of achieving no matter who is wearing Cavalier colors on gameday or how tight races are come March madness times! Their legacy continues to be written each time they step foot onto the court for another season filled with excitement, memories, intensity, and pure competition. The road ahead looks bright for this well-known basketball program from Charlottesville, VA!
