About Vanderbilt Commodores Basketball

The Vanderbilt Commodores Basketball team has a long and storied history, with some of the most memorable moments taking place on the court at Memorial Gymnasium. Playing their home games in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt’s basketball program dates back to 1910 when it was first established. The Commodores have been members of the Southeastern Conference since 1932. Over the years, Vanderbilt has enjoyed success both in the regular season and post-season tournaments, claiming several SEC championship titles as well as making numerous NCAA tournament appearances. Vanderbilt's main rival in basketball is the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Since 1932, 'The Battle for the Bluegrass' between these two teams has become one of college basketball's best rivalries. Other notable rivals include the Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers.

One of Vanderbilt's greatest achievements in basketball was advancing to the Final Four during the 1965 season where they ultimately lost to eventual national champion UCLA Bruins. In 2008 under head coach Kevin Stallings, The Commodores won their first-ever SEC tournament title with a 51-45 win over Arkansas Razorbacks. They would go on to make another appearance in 2011 under Coach Stallings who only narrowly lost out 58-56 to Kentucky in the championship game. Current head coach Jerry Stackhouse joined the Commodore staff for the after two successful seasons coaching NBA G League affiliate Memphis Hustle and previously spending 18 years playing professionally in both the NBA and EuroLeague. Stackhouse has brought new energy to Vanderbilt with his innovative approach to basketball strategies and leadership style that emphasizes unselfishness and teamwork—a perfect fit for this veteran squad which returns many talented upperclassmen from last year’s squad.
