With the Scarlet Knights representing Rutgers University, the men's basketball team proudly competes at a high level in NCAA Division I college basketball. The 2014-2015 season marked the debut of Rutgers Basketball in the Big Ten Conference. After the appointment of Head Coach Steve Pikiell in 2016, fortune started to take a turn for the better. The 2019-20 Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's basketball team had an incredible season, experiencing a remarkable six wins increase from the previous year. This successful record was marked by numerous triumphs over ranked teams and their sharp 18–1 home record, deemed one of the most impressive in America. Numerous experts had forecasted Rutgers's qualification into the 2020 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, yet it was regretfully canceled prior to the unveiling of the selection.
This season was a landmark occasion for Rutgers basketball, the first time since 1979 they were ranked among the top 25 teams in the country. After three decades of waiting, the team finally achieved a breakthrough in 2021 when they earned an impressive 10-seed position in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. After nearly four decades of droughts, the team was finally able to end their losing streak when they won against Clemson in the first round. It marked their very first tournament victory since 1983! After a tight battle with the Final Four participant the University of Houston in the second round, The Scarlet Knights, steered by Geo Baker and Ron Harper Jr., said goodbye to the competition. Currently, under Steve Pikiell's leadership for the 2024 season, Paul Mulcahy leading as a senior point guard; Cliff Omoruyi taking charge as junior center; and Caleb McConnell - last year’s Big Ten All-Defensive winner and super-senior guard at Rutgers such as Cam Spencer will be guiding their team forward.
