The University of Pittsburgh is known for its amazing basketball team. Pitt has gained 1,631 wins and lost only 1,189 games in basketball events back in the commencement of its 1905-06 season, and where some audiences have what they call Oakland Zoo for student section.
On March 31st, 2010, Pitt granted Dixon a two-year contract extension - meaning he would remain as the head coach until the 2017-18 season. On March 23, 2013, Dixon inked a contract extension that would last until the 2022–2023 season. Dixon made it known that he wished to "end his career at the University of Pittsburgh" following the extension. Consequently, on March 21st, 2016, Dixon left Pittsburgh to take up the head coaching position at TCU with whom he had an alma mater relationship. This decision was catalyzed by Pitt's lower contract buyout clause and their dissatisfaction with Dixon's team results. On March 28, 2016, the school recruited renowned Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings to fill its open head coaching role. After seventeen years of success, Pitt's luck ran out as they endured their first losing season in over a decade with a 16–17 record and 14th place standing in the ACC. The Panthers sadly lost to Duquesne for the first time in 20 years and endured a 106–51 defeat by Louisville, their most devastating loss since 1906. A dismal season concluded with an embarrassing defeat at their home games against #1 Virginia on a senior night. Other known rivals of Pittsburgh Panthers Basketball are Boston College Eagles and Duke Blue Devils.
It was a complete disaster for the Panthers, who scored only 7 points in the first half alone against the Cavaliers. In Stallings' sophomore season at Pitt, his team achieved a record of 8-24 while going 0-18 in ACC conference play. Pitt finished dead last in the conference, coming in at a dismal 15th place. On the 8th of March, 2018, Pitt released Stallings from his duties. On March 27, 2018, Duke associate head coach Jeff Capel reached an agreement to become the 16th head basketball coach at Pitt. Before joining Michigan, Capel was the head coach of VCU (2002–06) and Oklahoma (2006–11). The team has been successful in achieving one Final Four berth as well as 15 First Team All-American selections; further emphasizing their success with 26 NCAA basketball and nine National Invitation Tournament (NIT) appearances to date in 2019–20 against other basketball teams.
