The Oklahoma State Cowboys Basketball team has a long history of success, filled with gripping rivalries, exciting home games, and plenty of achievements. Head Coach Mike Boynton is leading the charge as the Cowboys strive to become a top-tier basketball program in the country. Over the years, several notable players have left their mark on OSU basketball, including Bob Kurland, Tony Allen, Bryant Reeves, John Lucas Jr., Desmond Mason, James Anderson, and Brad Underwood. Kurland was a two-time NCAA champion with Oklahoma A&M in 1945 and 1946. He was also the first major college player to achieve the dunk shot. Next up is Tony Allen who played for six seasons with the team from 2002 to 2008 and is remembered for his superior all-around play and athleticism. Bryant Reeves is perhaps best known for his size (7'0” tall) and strength, but he also had an incredible shooting touch that made him one of the top players in school history. John Lucas Jr., Desmond Mason, James Anderson, and Brad Underwood are some of OSU's most recent stars whose talents helped take Cowboy Basketball to greater heights over four successful NCAA appearances.
The Cowboys have always had an intense rivalry with the University of Oklahoma Sooners Basketball Team and have matched up against them over 95 times since 1908. The two teams have been inducted into both NAIA Halls of Fame for Men's Basketball Rivalry Games as well as inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame due to their longstanding legacy. More recent key victories include beating No. 24 West Virginia at Madison Square Garden at the 2020 Big 12 Basketball Championship Game in 2021 and winning back-to-back ranked games against Texas Tech Red Raiders and Kansas Jayhawks at Gallagher-Iba Arena earlier this year which marked OSU's first 11-win season in Big 12 Conference play since 2010–11 season. Their biggest victory however came when they beat No 1 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs during Round 2 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament to reach Sweet 16 - making it their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2005! As their journey continues in pursuit of becoming a top-tier basketball program the future looks very promising for OSU Cowboy Basketball!
