About Oklahoma Sooners Basketball

The University of Oklahoma is proudly represented by the Oklahoma Sooners men's basketball team in NCAA Division I. In addition, they are part of the Big 12 Conference and have succeeded under head coach Lon Kruger since taking over from Jeff Capel before the start of the 2011-12 season. Before he arrived in Oklahoma, Kruger had been a coach for Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, and Nevada-Las Vegas. His first season as head coach saw the Sooners finish with 15 wins and 16 losses - an improvement from their result in the 2010-11 campaign. In the 2012-13 season, the Oklahoma Sooners managed to surprise everyone with a 20-12 (11-7 Big 12, 4th) finish and their first NCAA tournament bid since 2009 when Blake Griffin led them to an Elite 8 appearance. Unfortunately, they were defeated in the second round of March Madness by San Diego State.

The 2013-14 season showed further growth for the Sooners as they ended up with a 23-10 overall record (12-6 Big 12, 2nd). But just like prior years, their NCAA tournament run was short-lived when they were abruptly defeated by North Dakota State in the second round. Heading into the 2014-15 season, four of the five starters from the previous year returned to take on their opponents. Among them was guard Buddy Hield who later went on to be named Big 12 player of the year and whose heroic efforts helped bring OU up to the semifinals in a thrilling Big 12 tournament run before ultimately being knocked out by Iowa State. Oklahoma was seeded third in the East region of the NCAA tournament and successfully beat underdogs Albany and Dayton to make it to Sweet Sixteen, but ultimately couldn't advance past Michigan State's formidable defense as they held on 62-58.

In 2015-2016, the Oklahoma basketball team dominated their regular season with a record of 24-6. Despite suffering an upset loss to West Virginia in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament, they still managed to secure a #2 seed for themselves in the NCAA tournament. Oklahoma dominated Cal State Bakersfield in the initial matchup, yet had difficulty putting away VCU in the second round even after a strong 21-7 start. In an impressive show of strength and skill, Oklahoma went on to vanquish Texas A&M 77–63, propelling themselves into the West Regional Final. There they dominated Top-Seed Oregon 80-68, ultimately earning a spot in the coveted Final Four. Oklahoma's Final Four opponent was the #2 seeded Villanova Wildcats, who had achieved a remarkable upset over Big 12 rival and number one seed Kansas to qualify for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Oklahoma was unable to overcome its formidable opponents and lost 95-51 in this decisive game. Lon Kruger is an NCAA history-maker - the first and only coach to have taken five different schools into the Sweet Sixteen, as well as won a game in the Tournament with each one. A remarkable feat that has yet to be duplicated! Of all basketball coaches who have coached Oklahoma teams, Kelvin Sampson is unequivocally crowned the most successful with a remarkable winning percentage.
