The Oakland Golden Grizzlies Basketball team has a long and storied history. Founded in 1957, the team has been competing in NCAA Division I since 1997. The program is currently part of the Horizon League and plays its home games at the Athletics Center O'rena in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The Golden Grizzlies have had some great rivalries over the years, including with Detroit Mercy Titans and Valparaiso Crusaders. In recent years, they have also developed a rivalry with the Cleveland State Vikings. The team has won several awards over the years, including two regular season championships (1998-99 & 2000-01) and one tournament championship (2000-01). The current head coach of the Golden Grizzlies is Greg Kampe, who has been with the program since 1984. He is one of only three active coaches to have coached for more than 35 years at one school.
Under his leadership, Oakland has made four NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2010, 2011 & 2012). The Golden Grizzlies have had some great players over the years as well. Some of their most notable alumni include Keith Benson (2006–10), Kay Felder (2014–16), Travis Bader (2010–14), and Duke Mondy (2011–15).
