Northern Kentucky Norse basketball is a proud program with a rich history of success. The team has been playing since 1946 when the school was founded and has become the flagship program for the university. Home games in BB&T Arena on campus draw passionate and enthusiastic crowds that provide an electric atmosphere for each contest. Over their history, the Norse have had rivalries with many schools including other members of the Horizon League. The team has achieved many successes throughout its long history. During their time in NCAA Division II, they captured a national championship as well as 14 conference titles. After transitioning to NCAA Division I basketball in 2012, the Norse have won two Horizon League Basketball championships in 2018 and 2019 and made four appearances in the NCAA tournament since 2017. Northern Kentucky's basketball program is full of many great players over their years of competition.
This past season Tyrese Maxey was selected number 21 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers after being named First-Team All-Horizon League and receiving multiple prestigious national awards honoring his outstanding play. Other greats include Tyler White who played four seasons at NKU before transferring to West Virginia University, where he earned All-Big 12 honors during his senior year in 2017-18, and Carson Williams who earned All-Horizon League honors three times from 2016-2019 as well as being named First Team All-League twice during this period. At Northern Kentucky, basketball is more than just cheering on student athletes; it’s about building traditions that last for generations and having pride in one’s school.
