About Cleveland State Vikings Basketball

The Cleveland State Vikings men's basketball team stands proudly as the symbol of excellence for Cleveland State University. Representing their school with tenacity, this group of dedicated players has worked hard to make a name for themselves in college athletics. Before the rebranding to its current name, Fenn College was known as the Fenn College Foxes. For almost fifty years, Cleveland State has been playing Division I basketball. After joining the Horizon League in 1994, they've continued to strive for excellence and have left their previous Mid-Continent Conference with twelve victorious years of play behind them (1982–1994). Before 1982, Cleveland State ran as an unattached program.

The 1985–86 season is without a doubt one of the most remarkable in Vikings history, as they accomplished something no other 14th-seeded team had ever done before - make it to the Sweet Sixteen of the 1986 NCAA tournament. Under the tutelage of Head Coach Kevin Mackey, Ken 'Mouse' McFadden and Eric Mudd spearheaded an unlikely upset against Bobby Knight's 3rd-seeded Indiana Hoosiers squad. Ultimately it was a thrilling match that ended with a final score of 83-79 in favor of Mackey's team. After the Vikings triumphed over St.Joseph's with a thrilling 75-69 victory in the second round, their hopes of advancing were dashed when Hall of Famer David Robinson scored an incredible buzzer-beater to secure Navy's 71-70 win. After qualifying for the NIT Tournament two years in a row, Cleveland State went 23 seasons without making it back to the NCAA Tournament.

On December 15, 2008, Cleveland State University achieved their most remarkable regular season win to date as senior guard Cedric Jackson made a heroic three-quarter court shot with just seconds left on the clock, leading them to an upset of the #11 Syracuse Orange team - 72-69. This was Colorado State University's third victory versus a Top 25-ranked opponent ever and their very first one away from home. Later that season, they achieved wins over Top 25 opponents for the fourth and fifth time when they won against #17 Butler in the championship game of the Horizon League Tournament with a score of 57-54. Subsequently, during their first round in the 2009 NCAA tournament - as 13th seeded team competing within the Midwest bracket - they showed great talent by defeating 4th seeded and #12 Wake Forest with a definitive 84-69 victory.
