Representing Butler University of Indianapolis, Indiana, the Bulldogs men's basketball team is a proud member of the Big East Conference. They play their home games at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Ever since Butler's inception, they have been a part of the Horizon League and had previously participated in the Missouri Valley Conference. However, 2012 saw them defect from the Horizon League to join up with Atlantic 10. The very next year marked their transition into Big East - illustrating how successful Butler has become. Starting out as a mid-major program in the late 1990s, Butler University rose to fame and recognition from 2006-2012 with its men's basketball team. During that span of time, the Bulldogs ranked nationally for most weeks except for 2004, 2005, and 2014. However, regardless of ranking they competed each season starting 1997 up until the present day (with exception of those three years).
In 2010, Butler made it all the way to the NCAA National Championship Game where they faced off against Duke after a shocking victory over Michigan State in the Final Four. Since the NCAA Basketball Division I - Men's college basketball tournament increased to 64 teams in 1985, Butler University has been the smallest school with an enrollment of only 4,500 students to make it all the way to a national championship game. Following the tournament, the Bulldogs made it to another championship game against UConn after defeating VCU in the Final Four. By conquering VCU, Butler made history by being the first mid-major program to reach a championship game in successive seasons since 1979 when tournament seeding began. Additionally, they are now the only team from Indiana that has achieved back-to-back championship games!
Despite the Bulldogs' impressive National Championship win in 1927, it was prior to March Madness and therefore does not count towards their NCAA record. After one season in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Butler swapped affiliations and joined an overhauled Big East for basketball-only activities during the 2013–14 period. Unfortunately, their inaugural year was far from successful; they wound up with a 14–17 record, their first losing mark since 2004–05 - settling at ninth position out of ten teams. In their second season, the Bulldogs stunned expectations by ending up tied for runner-up in the conference. Butler's 2015–16 campaign finished with a noteworthy 21–11 record and 10–8 Big East play score - earning them an invitation to the NCAA tournament in which they advanced to Round 2! Despite being predicted to finish 7th, this tenacious team exceeded all odds.
