The Toyota HBCU New York Football Classic is one of the most popular football events in the country. Founded in 2002, this annual event features teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Over the years, the Classic has become a highlight of college football season, drawing fans from across the nation to see some of the best HBCU New York Football Classic teams compete against each other. The games are held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, making it one of the only football events to be hosted in an NFL stadium. The HBCU NYC Classic has developed several rivalries over its 19-year history. The biggest rivalry is between Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University, which have faced off six times since 2002 with FAMU leading 4-2. Other rivalries include South Carolina State vs North Carolina A&T and Norfolk State vs Howard University. The Classic has also been home to some of college football's top players. Some notable alumni include former NFL running back DeAngelo Williams (Memphis Tigers), wide receiver Isaac Bruce (Memphis Tigers), and quarterback Brady White (Memphis Tigers).
It also includes defensive end Javon Hargrave (South Carolina State Bulldogs), linebacker Austin Hall (Memphis Tigers), and cornerback TJ Carter (Memphis Tigers). Currently leading the program is head coach Ryan Silverfield who took over in 2020 after Mike Norvell left for Florida State. Silverfield has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of Year honors from both Conference USA and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). As they look ahead to 2023 events, fans can expect great competition from all four teams involved in this year’s classic: Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, Norfolk State Spartans, North Carolina A&T Aggies, and South Carolina State Bulldogs.
