The Victoria HarbourCats are a summer-collegiate baseball team located in Victoria, British Columbia. Founded in 2013, the HarbourCats have quickly become one of the most successful teams in the West Coast League (WCL). The team plays its home games at Royal Athletic Park, located on the edge of downtown Victoria. Over the years, the HarbourCats have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including Bellingham Bells, Corvallis Knights, and Wenatchee AppleSox. The HarbourCats have won numerous awards throughout their history, including two WCL championships and four WCL playoff appearances. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball (MLB), including Nick Pivetta and Tyler O’Neill. Currently leading the program is head coach Graig Merritt who took over in 2020 after Brian McRae left for Kansas City Royals organization. Merritt has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coac.
He earned Coach of the Year honors from both WCL and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The HarbourCats are led by some of college baseball's top players such as pitcher Mason Wells who was named First Team All-WCL last season after throwing for 1,203 strikeouts; outfielder Daniel Carinci who had a .366 batting average last year; catcher Taylor Wright who led all hitters with 13 home runs last season; shortstop Brady Moxham who had 89 hits last year; and third baseman Tristan Peters who had 25 RBIs last season. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Victoria HarbourCats will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence. With a talented roster full of experienced veterans and promising newcomers alike, there is no doubt that this team will be competitive once again this year as they strive to bring another championship back to Victoria. Off the field, the HarbourCats Baseball team is just as impressive. In recent years, the team has consistently maintained an impressive level of community involvement.
In 2020 alone, for example, members from all levels of the organization volunteered over 2200 hours throughout Victoria and surrounding areas by participating in local events such as food drives or helping out with youth sports programs. This commitment to giving back is reflected in fan attendance at home games which continues to grow each year despite limited capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions.
