Auto racing is a motorsport involving the racing of automobiles for competition. Auto racing has existed since the invention of the automobile. Races of various sorts were organised, with the first recorded as early as 1867. Many of the earliest events were effectively reliability trials, aimed at proving these new machines were a practical mode of transport, but soon became an important way for competing makers to demonstrate their machines. By the 1930s specialist racing cars had developed. There are now numerous different categories, each with different rules and regulations.

The first prearranged match race of two self-powered road vehicles over a specified route occurred on April 28, 1887, between the electric 'Phaeton' number 648 built by James Switzer & Sons of Tiffin, Ohio, and the gasoline-powered 'Torpedo' number 3 built by Henry Ford in Detroit, Michigan. The race took place on Woodward Avenue from Eight Mile Road to just south of downtown Pontiac, a distance of 10 mi (16 km). The Phaeton was driven by William "Bill" Frost, chief engineer at Switzer's company, and the Torpedo by Henry Ford. The Phaeton finished the course in 33 minutes 43 seconds, while the Torpedo ran for 4 hours and 5 minutes, having stopped eight times to make repairs including replacing a broken chain.
