The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band that originated in Cincinnati, Ohio. The group was founded in 1986 by singer Greg Dulli, lead guitarist Rick McCollum, rhythm guitarist John Curley, and drummer Steve Earle. The band's first album, Big Top Halloween (1987), was recorded in Cincinnati and released independently. The Afghan Whigs signed to the Seattle-based indie label Sub Pop in 1988 and released their second album, Up in It (1990). The album was produced by Jack Endino and featured the band's first single, "Hey Cuz". The Afghan Whigs gained notoriety for their live shows, which often featured cover songs of popular R&B artists such as Prince and Motown acts. The group's third album, Congregation (1992), was also produced by Endino and featured the singles "Debonair" and "Turn on the Water". The album was the band's first to be released on a major label, Elektra Records. The Afghan Whigs toured extensively in support of Congregation, including dates with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The Afghan Whigs' fourth album, Black Love (1996), was produced by Greg Dulli and featured the singles "Honky's Ladder" and "My Enemy". The album was the band's most commercially successful, reaching number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and number 36 on the Billboard 200. The Afghan Whigs disbanded in 2001, but reunited in 2006 for a series of shows. In 2012, the band released its first album in 16 years, Do to the Beast (2014).
