It's no secret that the UK is home to some of the most iconic sporting venues in the world. From Wimbledon to Ascot, these venues have been hosting major sporting events for centuries, and show no signs of slowing down. But what about the venues that are a little bit older? The ones that date back before the turn of the century? Here we take a look at some of the oldest sporting venues in the UK.

Kempton Park Racecourse
Kempton Park is a horse racing venue located in Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex, England, and is thought to be one of the oldest sporting venues in the UK still in use today. The first recorded race meeting took place here all the way back in 1878, making it over 150 years old. Kempton Park is home to National Hunt racing (with fences) and flat racing, with King George VI Chase on Boxing Day being a Grade 1 event.

The Oval
The Oval is a cricket ground in Kennington, London, and is the home of Surrey County Cricket Club. It first opened its doors in 1845, making it just over 170 years old. It's most famous for being the venue of the very first Test match ever played, back in 1880. The Oval has played host to a variety of other historically significant sporting events including England's first international football match versus Scotland in 1870 and the first-ever FA Cup final in 1872.

Lord's Cricket Ground
Lord's is another cricket ground in St John's Wood, London, and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club. It first opened in 1814, making it just over 200 years old. It's considered to be the most prestigious cricket ground in the world and has hosted more Test matches than any other venue.

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club
Wimbledon is of course the most famous tennis tournament in the world, and it takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The club itself was founded way back in 1868, making it over 150 years old. The first Wimbledon tournament was held here in 1877.

Deepdale Stadium
Deepdale is a football stadium located in Preston, Lancashire, and is the home of the Preston North End Football Club. It opened its doors in 1875, making it just over 140 years old. Deepdale is the oldest football stadium in the world that is still in use by a professional football club.

There you have it, five of the oldest sporting venues in the UK. All of these venues have stood the test of time and are still going strong today. They're a reminder of just how rich and varied our sporting heritage is, and long may they continue.
