Kansas City Current is an American professional women's soccer team based in Kansas City, Kansas. Founded in 2021, the Current is the newest addition to the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). The team plays its home games at Children's Mercy Park, located on the grounds of Sporting Kansas City. Under the leadership of head coach Huw Williams, the Current have quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the NWSL. The team has already established rivalries with other teams in their conference, including OL Reign, Portland Thorns FC, and Utah Royals FC. The Current has also won several awards since their inception. In 2021 they were named NWSL Expansion Team of the Year and had two players named to the All-NWSL Second Team: forward Shea Groom and defender Taylor Leach. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in other leagues around the world, including U.S. internationals Christen Press and Ali Krieger. Currently leading the program is head coach Huw Williams who took over in 2021 after he left his post as an assistant coach for Manchester United Women’s Football Club.
Williams has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both Conference USA and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The Current is led by some of college football's top players such as forward Sydney Miramontez who was named First Team All-Conference USA last season after scoring 11 goals; midfielder Maddie Pokorny who had four assists last season; defender Katelyn Jensen who led all defenders with 36 interceptions; and goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart who had five shutouts last season. As they look ahead to 2023 events, Kansas City Current will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence.
