The American rock and electronic duo BoomBox was founded in 2004 by DJ-trained producer Russ Randolph and multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Zion Rock Godchaux. The pair grew up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and later moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Their music has been described as "a bass-heavy mix of electronic little rock, soul blast, and Americana." They have released three studio albums, the most recent being 2014's Filling in the Color. Randolph and Godchaux met while attending high school in Muscle Shoals. They bonded over their shared love of electronic music and soon began making their tracks together. They released their first album, Diplodocus, in 2006. The album was well-received by critics and led to the duo being nominated for an Emmy Award for Best New Artist.
In 2009, BoomBox released its second album, Righteous Sound. The album was again met with critical acclaim, and the duo won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. BoomBox's third album, Filling in the Color, was released in 2014. The album was described as "a mix of electronic rock and Americana." It received positive reviews from critics and peaked at number two on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Early in their history, several reviewers termed the band's style "jamtronic" due to the way that jam and electronic music blended, but the group rejected the description as being unreliable. Godchaux asserts that "Jamtronic" is "jam bands trying to sound like a DJ. We think of ourselves as simply one DJ. Bands already have their songs and their performances. A DJ is trying to make the party happen." Their High Sierra Music Festival, Electric Forest, Red Rocks, and Hangout Music Festival were huge hits!
