A British-American rock group formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran British guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones and fellow Brit Ian McDonald, as well as American vocalist Lou Gramm. In addition to Mick, bassist Jeff Pilson and multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel joined forces with guitarist Bruce Watson, keyboard player Michael Bluestein, and drummer Chris Frazier. Jones came up with the band's name after finding that he, McDonald, and Dennis Elliott were all British, whereas Gramm, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi were all Americans. The band's eponymous debut album was released in 1977, and its follow-up, Double Vision, arrived the following year. Foreigner became one of the world's best-selling bands of the 1980s with such hits as "Hot Blooded," "Urgent," "Juke Box Hero," and "I Want to Know What Love Is." Foreigner has sold more than eighty million albums worldwide and has had ten singles that have reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. The rock band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The group has continued to tour and record into the 21st century.
