About The Barber of Seville

The Barber of Seville, or The Useless Precaution is an opera buffa in two acts composed by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. It is based on Pierre Beaumarchais' 1775 comedy Le Barbier de Séville and was first performed at the Teatro Argentina in Rome on 20 February 1816. Since then, the opera has been produced extensively all over the world and has become one of the most popular works in classical music. The Barber of Seville tells the story of Count Almaviva's attempt to woo Rosina, a ward of Doctor Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself. With the help of Figaro, a barber-cum-jack-of-all-trades, Almaviva manages to outwit Bartolo and win Rosina's heart. The Barber of Seville has been performed in some of the most prestigious venues around the world including La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London, and The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It has also been featured as part of major international festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival and Salzburg Festival.

Since its debut performance more than 200 years ago, The Barber Of Seville has won numerous awards including three Tony Awards for Best Revival Of A Musical (in 1975), Best Actor In A Musical (Victor Borge for his portrayal of Figaro), and Best Featured Actress In A Musical (Joan Diener for her portrayal of Rosina) at the 1976 Tony Awards ceremony. It has also received multiple Olivier Award nominations for Best Production Of An Opera at both the 1978 and 1980 awards ceremonies. Last 2021, The Barber Of Seville was brought back to life with a new production from New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House starring soprano Anna Netrebko as Rosina and tenor Javier Camarena as Count Almaviva. This production is conducted by Maestro Riccardo Frizza with sets designed by David Rockwell and costumes designed by Catherine Zuber. Following this production will be another production from Teatro Real Madrid starring soprano Nino Machaidze as Rosina and tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Count Almaviva which opened in 2022 followed by yet another production from Teatro Alla Scala Milan featuring soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Rosina and tenor Vittorio Grigolo as Count Almaviva which is scheduled to open this 2024.
