Michael Jason Isbell is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Jason Isbell music career worked with the Drive-By Truckers and as a solo artist. In 2013, he won two Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album (for Simple Math) and Best American Roots Song (for "Cover Me Up"). Isbell was born in Green Hill, Alabama, two miles from the Alabama/Tennessee state line. He is the son of Debbie (née Tindle) and Mike Isbell. His father was a professional musician who played guitar and sang in bars and clubs around north Alabama, while his mother worked as a schoolteacher. Jason's sister, Shonna, is a country music singer-songwriter. Isbell grew up in a musical family and was exposed to a variety of music at an early age. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and by the time he was 12, he was performing onstage with his father's band. When he was 16, he joined the Drive-By Truckers as a guitarist and singer.
He appeared on five of their albums, including 2001's Southern Rock Opera and 2003's Decoration Day, which was named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone, Paste, and Amazon.com. In 2007, Isbell left the Drive-By Truckers to pursue a solo career. He released his first album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. His second album, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were released in 2009. The album was produced by Dave Cobb and featured Isbell's backing band, the 400 Unit. The album was named one of the best of the year by Paste, Amazon.com, and American Songwriter. In 2011, Isbell released his third album, Here We Rest. In 2013, Isbell released his fourth album, Southeastern. It won two Grammy Awards, for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song (for "Cover Me Up"). In 2015, Isbell released his fifth album, Something More Than Free. In 2017, Isbell released his sixth album, The Nashville Sound. Isbell has said that his songwriting is influenced by such artists as John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Townes Van Zandt.
