The Siudy Garrido Flamenco Company is responsible for the advancement of Flamenco art in the United States by providing a contemporary vision of Flamenco through a variety of seasonal programs. The company is made up of eight talented flamenco ballet Dancers and an ensemble of brilliant Musicians led by award-winning Choreographer Siudy Garrido, all with the goal of presenting a modern perspective on Flamenco.
Siudy Flamenco Dance Theater was founded in 2000 by Garrido, who has since choreographed six stunning shows: Caminos Flamencos with a spectacular debut at Epcot Center; En Cuerpo y Alma (2003); Bailaora (2005, Second Place of Excellence from the City of Caracas); Entre Mundos (2008), which premiered Off-Broadway in 2011 and was nominated for Outstanding Choreography at the Drama Desk Awards; Flamenco Intimo (2013); and El Amor Brujo (2015), which featured Gustavo Dudamel conducting the LA Phil.
Garrido's work is marked by her deep understanding and exploration of the many styles within Flamenco, as well as her commitment to expanding its vocabulary. In addition to her work with the company, Garrido is also a sought-after teacher, offering classes and workshops in New York City and around the world. She is the author of Flamenco: A Journey Through Dance and Music (2010), which has been translated into five languages and is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship.
Garrido has been honored with the prestigious National Dance Award from the Congress of Racial Equality and received a City of Caracas Award for Excellence in Choreography. She was also named one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" in 2009 and one of their "Top 20 Dancers" in 2010.
