Nai-Ni Chen (October 31, 1959 – December 12, 2021) was a Taiwanese-American dancer and choreographer who came to the United States in the early 1980s. She trained in traditional Chinese and Taiwanese dance before immigrating to the United States at the start of the decade. In the US, she continued her training in ballet and modern dance. She later joined the Martha Graham Dance Company, where she danced for five years.
After leaving the Graham company, Chen founded the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company in 1992. The company performs traditional fan dances and ribbon dances in addition to original works that reflect Chens' diverse influences. A variety of hybrid dance performances are frequently included in the show. The company has toured extensively throughout the United States and Asia, and has been presented at such venues as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln Center. Chen was also a professor at Montclair State University, where she taught dance from 2001 until her death in 2021.
Chen's work often incorporated elements of Chinese culture and folklore into contemporary dances. She was known for her use of color and light in her choreography, and her work was often described as "exuberant" and "joyous". Chen won several awards for her work, including a Bessie Award in 2003.
