The ballet draws its inspiration from the classic vampire story by Bram Stoker, published in 1897. The ballet offers a sinister yet delicious love tale. Dracula becomes fixated on Svetlana, a young woman who is madly in love with a mortal man, to quench his craving for new blood after becoming dissatisfied with his undead wives. Svetlana is torn between her love for the living and her attraction to the dark, brooding vampire. The lovers’ conflict propels the story to its thrilling climax.
Tales of creatures like vampires extend back to ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt, but the modern image first appeared in Eastern Europe around the 1700s: terrible spirits that prowled cemeteries, entered dead bodies, and brought them back to life. Vampirism appears to have its roots in people's desire for immortality and their dread of dying, together with their attempts to explain the incomprehensible. Despite the fact that vampire lore has been around for a very long time, Stoker's portrayal of them has become the norm in pop culture and artistic interpretations all across the world.
A creepy levitation scene for Svetlana and unsettling flying movements for Dracula and a few of his leading ladies are part of the choreography. Choreographer Ben Stevenson called on the same professionals—Foy Inventerprises, better known as Flying by Foy—who have given wings to Broadway, film, and music stars like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift for the aerial scenes.
According to set designer Thomas Boyd, the ballet begins in the Count's candlelight crypt, a "dark, nighttime environment in which vampires live."
Both Boyd and costume designer Judanna Lynn researched the historical location of Transylvania (the centre section of modern-day Romania) as well as the fictitious setting of Stoker's novel. The ballet has approximately 70 costumes and three separate sets, including the crypt, the village, and Dracula's chamber. The Count's is the most elaborate.
When Dracula spreads out his 30-pound cape completely, its formidable wingspan measures 23 feet and has bat-like edges. His brides dress in torn bridal robes that are stained with grave dirt and decorated in keeping with the time period in which they developed into vampires.
