WWE Saturday Night's Main Event is an American professional wrestling television program that is produced by WWE. It premiered on NBC in 1985 as a two-hour special and returned to the network in November 1986 as a one-hour weekly show. The show was broadcast live from the Long Island Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the first professional wrestling event ever held at that venue. From 1993 until 2002, it aired occasionally on Fox. The show featured wrestlers from the company's syndicated programs of the time, such as WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge.
The format of the show was different from that of WWE's flagship programs, Raw and SmackDown. Main Event featured matches between the high-level talent that were not featured on those programs as well as matches involving mid-carders. The program also occasionally featured "gotchya" moments in which a heel wrestler would be ambushed by a babyface. The show was hosted by "Mean Gene" Okerlund and featured commentators such as Gorilla Monsoon, Jesse Ventura, Vince McMahon, and Bobby Heenan.
The program became a rating success for NBC, often outdrawing Raw and SmackDown in the ratings. After the cancellation of Saturday Night's Main Event in May 1992, WWE held a series of Main Event-style specials on NBC in October and November of that year. The program was revived as a special event on Fox in February 2002 and then became a regular show in May of that year. The final Main Event airing on Fox took place on July 3, 2008. The show was replaced the following week by a re-branded version of Velocity.
In October 2016, the show returned as a special event on the USA Network. Saturday Night's Main Event was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006. The show was jam-packed with popular stars competing in titanic title matches, plus an array of specialty showdowns like steel cage and handicap clashes.
