World Wrestling Entertainment, better known as WWE, is an American professional wrestling company. A global media and entertainment trade name, WWE has also expanded into other areas such as filmmaking, football, and various business ventures. The company is additionally involved in licensing its intellectual property to companies that produce video games and action figures. WWE was founded by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt in 1952 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd. The company's name was changed to World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963 when it came under the ownership of Vince McMahon Sr. and became the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world.
In 1982, Vincent K. McMahon founded Titan Sports, the company that would eventually buy World Wrestling Federation Entertainment and become WWE. In 2000, WWE acquired WCW from Turner Broadcasting System, bringing an end to the Monday Night Wars. In 2001, the World Wrestling Federation was renamed World Wrestling Entertainment. The following year, WWE introduced the brand extension, a plan that split the roster into two distinctive rosters, one representing the Raw brand and the other representing SmackDown! brand. In January 2010, WWE launched the "WWE Universe" campaign, which featured the tagline, "The Place to Be".
The WWE Universe campaign coincided with the launch of WWE's 2010 programming on Syfy. In February 2011, WWE launched the "Be a STAR" anti-bullying campaign, which is dedicated to promoting a positive and tolerant social environment. In October 2011, WWE launched the "WWE App" on iOS and Android platforms. The app allows users to access WWE content on their mobile devices. In May 2012, WWE launched the "WWE Performance Center" in Orlando, Florida. The Performance Center is a 26,000-square-foot facility that serves as a training ground for aspiring WWE Superstars and Divas.
