The Women's National Basketball Association is a professional basketball league in the United States founded on April 22, 1996. It comprises twelve teams and its regular season is played from May to September. The league is headquartered in New York City and its structure is modeled after the NBA. The WNBA has a global media partnership with ESPN. The league's inaugural season featured eight teams, with each team playing a schedule of 32 games during the regular season. The top four teams advanced to the playoffs and the first WNBA Championship was held in 1997. The league has expanded several times since then, adding teams in Atlanta (1998), Charlotte (1999), Detroit (1998), and Houston (2000).
The WNBA is currently composed of 12 teams: the Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Dallas Wings, Indiana Fever, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm, San Antonio Stars, and Washington Mystics. At the end of the season, four teams play in a best-of-three playoff series to determine the league champion. The current champions are the Minnesota Lynx, who have won five championships (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003). The Lynx are also the only team to have appeared in every WNBA Finals.
